I started painting portraits in art school to get away from the abstract illustrations that I had been focused on. At the time, I felt it was important to familiarize myself with a more figurative style. I didn't think I could call myself an artist without being able to draw the human form.
For my student show I did a series of portraits of my friends. Since then I've continued painting portraits of my favorite artists and I've had numerous portraits commissioned, as well.
